A Christmas Message

A Happy Christmas to you

It’s a time of celebration. We listen to the familiar words of the gospel account of the Annunciation to Mary, the Angel visiting Joseph in a dream, then the birth in a stable. Again the Angels are busy, the Heavenly Host visits the Shepherds out in the fields with their message ‘go to Bethlehem and see this wonderful thing that has happened’. They leave their sheep (although at least one would have had to stay to ensure the safety of the flock) and go into town to see the new born baby, Jesus. What do they do on their way back? They tell others of what they have seen. This year we have the familiar story before us and we too are asked to share it.

Already we have had our Christmas Communion – not waiting until Christmas Eve at midnight, and our carol service when we were joined by the Congolese congregation who meet here every Sunday. It was indeed a joyful day, singing with gusto carols old and not so old. They tell, in many different ways, of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ and the narrative surrounding it.

No matter where and how you are celebrating Christmas, may you and those around you know the joy of the season, once again being reminded that Jesus came with a purpose. He came to bring love and peace, but more importantly he came to save us from our sin, to redeem our past and to set us on a new road for the future.

Our new road starts from the moment we ask Jesus into our lives. A New Year begins with the opportunity to start again. Leave the old behind and embrace the new.

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
“Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.”
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
